Ewan’s Story – Ewan thrives in inclusive club’s watersports adventures

Have you ever wondered what it is that makes a club inclusive? Our research shows mainstream clubs are mostly seen as doing average or below at including deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children – by clubs themselves! But some of them, like the club in this video, are doing it very well indeed.

In the video, 13-year-old Ewan talks about how he’s been made to feel welcome at 1st Beaumaris Sea Scouts. You’ll learn about how he tried other groups, but this one was the most accepting. You can see Ewa’s enthusiasm for all the club’s activities, like canoeing, sailing, kayaking and camping.

Ewan explains how he uses hearing aids and speech to communicate. He also talks about how he communicates without his hearing aids during water-based activities.

And if you’ve wondered whether hearing loss is a barrier to taking part in group activities, Ewen says no. In fact, “it doesn’t really block anything unless you let it.”
