Join us in celebrating our differences! We are currently accepting entries for our upcoming art exhibition – the theme is ‘Everyone is Different.’ We can’t wait to see the imaginative responses from ages 8 through to 23 for this theme. The submission deadline is the 16th of February 2024, so we encourage young people to explore their creativity and see where it leads.
What is Deaf Children Australia’s annual art exhibition?
Deaf Children Australia’s annual art exhibition is a unique initiative and is the only one of its kind in Australia! We’ve created this exciting exhibition to promote, support and inspire deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) young people across Australia to be creative and enjoy the tremendous benefits of creativity.
Earlier this year, our art event ‘Heroes and Leaders’ was transformed into a month-long art exhibition at Gasworks Art Park in Albert Park. This exhibition secured extensive media including SBS World News, who ran a news story about the event and the artists who took part.
What impact has our art exhibition had?
After just two short years, our annual art exhibition has had a huge impact. We’re thrilled to see how our exhibition has created great opportunities for young deaf artists and launched the careers of many young DHH artists. One of our young artists, Jaya Palmer (TAS), who has taken part in both of our art events and was a runner up in this year’s event, has used the grant she was awarded, in combination with her Youth Grant, to pursue her passion for art and start a business. She is promoting exposure to deaf art through the website she launched to sell her digital artwork.
Sion Takahashi (NSW) has taken part in both our art events, receiving an art grant twice. He has used his grants to launch a range of posters and t-shirts featuring his beautifully detailed and colourful art. Taking part in our events has further inspired his creativity and confidence.

Another young artist, Maggie Sandals (VIC), has been commissioned by Crema Constructions to create a public artwork for their ‘Gallery in the Sky’ initiative. Crema Constructions first launched Gallery in the Sky in 2015 and each year has showcased the work of emerging artists on major construction sites around Melbourne, including the work of student and indigenous artists.
Maggie was asked to create her interpretation of Melbourne at 344 City Road, Melbourne (Madison Grand). This provides an exciting chance to exhibit her work to a massive audience and could open all kinds of doors to other opportunities.
