Luca Misquitta HOW I BELONG (VIC)

Tell us how your artwork addresses this year’s theme ’We belong’:    

I used a picture of my brother Levi and me to show that we are both deaf and we are family. We have a special bond because we are the only deaf people in our family. I also used pictures of my hands signing belonging and love. I wanted to use hands in my artwork because deaf people use their hands to communicate. 

Tell us about the ideas or themes your artwork explores with the theme ‘We belong’:  

I wrote and drew images and words that show how deaf people are connected to all people and also how deaf people are connected to each other. My photos of signing hands show how many deaf people have a strong connection with each other through using their hands to sign. 

What type of art have you submitted and why:  I used water colours because I love rainbow colours and I wanted a beautiful background. I used photos because I wanted to include my hands signing and I found it difficult trying to draw signing hands. I used texta to add powerful words to describe how I feel about the theme Belonging.
