Tell us how your artwork addresses this year’s theme ’We belong’:
My artwork matches the title ‘Under the Same Sky’ because it shows that even though the universe is huge, we have a special place in it. I made a model of myself out of clay, which is literally part of the earth! In sculpture, I am standing beside the whole globe. I did this because I wanted to show the earth belongs to all of us, and we have to take care of it together.
Behind me, I created a huge galaxy full of stars. To me, ‘the sky’ isn’t just the blue air above our house – it is the giant universe that wraps around everyone on Earth. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you live on the globe, when we look up at night, we are all looking at the exact same stars. We all belong here together under the same sky.
Tell us about the ideas or themes your artwork explores with the theme ‘We belong’:
- We Are All Made of the Same Stuff (connection): I used clay to make myself because clay comes right out of the dirt! It explores the idea that humans and the Earth are connected. We aren’t just living on the planet; we are actually a part of it.
- Sharing Our Home (belonging): Because my clay model is beside the globe, it explores the idea of sharing. The earth doesn’t just belong to one person or one country. It belongs to everyone, and we all have to share the same space and look out for each other.
- The Sky Connects Us All (Unity): This artwork shows that no matter how different we are on the outside, we all live under the exact same ceiling – the sky! When you look up at the stars, someone on the other side of the word can see them too. It means nones of us are every truly alone.
What type of art have you submitted and why:
- Clay: for the model of myself and the globe
- Cardboard and paper: to build the based and the galaxy background
- Glitter Glue and stickers: to make the stars and planets shine
I chose to make a 3D sculpture instead of just a flat drawing because I wanted my artwork to feel real, like you could step right into it!
I picked the clay for myself because clay comes from the earth, so it feels like I’m actually connected to the ground. I used cardboard and paper because they are strong and let me build a big deep galaxy background. Finally, I chose glitter glue and stickers because space shouldn’t be dark and boring – it should be bright, magical and full of sparky stars! Using all these different materials together made it super fun to create and really brings the universe to life.
