Abaka Smith NGOELMUN DANALAIG “OUR LIVES/WAY OF LIFE” (QLD)

Tell us how your artwork addresses this year’s theme ’We Belong’:

My culture is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

This painting depicts dancers in traditional dress.

My story includes – I am in an indigenous dance group at school, and this makes me feel I belong. Because of this I drew the watercolour of Torres Strait Islander Dancers.

Tell us about the ideas or themes your artwork explored with the theme ‘We Belong’:

We all belong and dance is something everyone can join in. I can copy the other dancers’ steps and be part of the group even with my hearing loss. I wear two Cochlears and I’m always included in our cultural dance at school and in community.

What type of art have you submitted and why:

Watercolour painting on watercolour paper. I like the way I can shade with watercolour. Black pen helps define my work.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Dear ‘We Belong’, I am writing you a note as Abby’s art teacher. I met Abby this year and have watched her grow as an artist. She is more talented than what she thinks. Her beautiful support team and I have been encouraging Abby to explore art as an opportunity to express who she is and to feel good while she is creating. Abby is such a wonderful young woman and is one of the more focused students I have, at the time of writing this, Abby doesn’t know that her support team has filled the application form out for this competition, I am about to let her know in our next art lesson. Wishing you luck Abby 😊 – Ms Connolly
