Ebony William SQUIGGLES AND WIGGLES BELONG IN THE ART GALLERY (NSW)

Tell us how your artwork addresses this year’s theme ’We Belong’:

I am Ebony’s hearing support teacher and I have assisted Ebony by giving her the tools to contribute an entry to this exhibition. Ebony is DeafBlind, uses a wheelchair and has complex health needs, but she can still express herself through art. Her contribution, created using assistive technology, shows everyone belongs in the art world and can find a ‘voice’ through artmaking. She also belongs as part of our hearing support team with her deaf and hard of hearing peers who were all given a opportunity to put in an artwork.

Tell us about the ideas or themes your artwork explored with the theme ‘We Belong’:

Inclusion, equity and creativity all contribute to a sense of belonging.

What type of art have you submitted and why?:

Ebony used an online drawing application called Wigglypaint to make an animated digital artwork. She enjoys this application because it makes lots of different sounds when you make marks and the bright colours and movement help her engage with the visuals. She used a large, adapted mouse with a trackball and a switch device to make her marks on the ‘page’.
