Cheering on the Australian Deaf Rugby teams as they prepare to represent the green and gold.
There is something special about seeing athletes represent their country on the world stage. This year, Australian Deaf rugby players are preparing to do just that in Japan, and Deaf Children Australia is proud to cheer them on.
The 2026 World Deaf Rugby sevens championship is set to bring together deaf and hard of hearing rugby players from around the world. The Deaf Rugby World Cup in Japan will go from the 30th of October to the 5th of November 2026, with Australian men’s and women’s team preparing to compete.
For players, it’s a chance to test their skills, represent Australia and connect with an international sporting community. For young people watching from home, it is also a reminder of the opportunities that sport can offer.
Rugby is more than just a game, it brings teamwork, commitment, communication and trust together on the field. Deaf and hard of hearing athletes bring those same strengths, adapting communication and working as a team to compete at a high level.
International Deaf sport also creates opportunities to share experiences and celebrate Deaf culture across countries. It shows that there is no single way to communicate, lead or succeed as an athlete.
Seeing deaf and hard of hearing athletes compete internationally can have a powerful impact on children and young people. Role models help young people imagine new possibilities for themselves, whether they are interested in rugby, swimming, athletics or simply trying a local sport for the first time.
Access matters. Clear communication, welcoming coaches and a willingness to adapt can help more children join teams, build friendships and enjoy being active. When sporting communities make inclusion part of everyday practice, more children have a chance to discover what they love.
Australian Deaf Rugby has also announced community open training sessions for 28 October 2026 at Trumper Park Oval in Paddington, Sydney, ahead of the teams’ departure. It is an opportunity for supporters to show their encouragement before the tournament.
As the competition approaches, we wish Australia’s players, coaches and support teams success. We look forward to celebrating their dedication, teamwork and the connections they build along the way.
From everyone at Deaf Children Australia: GO AUSTRALIA!
Meet the Team!
