Representing Australia at the 2025 Deaflympics in Japan was an unforgettable milestone for Ruby and the result of months of commitment, travel and determination.
With support from a Deaf Children Australia Youth Grant, Ruby was able to compete in the international soccer tournament and represent her country on one of the world’s most significant stages for deaf athletes.
A life-changing sporting experience
Attending the Deaflympics gave Ruby the opportunity to compete at the highest level of deaf sport alongside athletes from across the world.
The experience was about more than soccer. It helped Ruby build confidence, develop greater independence and strengthen her sense of belonging within the international deaf community.
Competing against leading deaf athletes also supported her development on the field. Ruby improved her technical and tactical skills, learned to communicate effectively using visual and non-verbal cues and gained valuable experience performing under pressure.
She also developed a greater appreciation for different cultures by meeting and competing alongside athletes from many countries.
Representing Australia with pride
Ruby played an important role throughout the tournament. She was selected in the starting line-up for all but one match, including Australia’s bronze medal match against Great Britain.
Her performances exceeded her expectations and demonstrated the teamwork, resilience and leadership she had developed throughout her preparation.
Support from her coaches and teammates helped Ruby remain focused and motivated while navigating the demands of an international tournament.
Commitment beyond the field
Ruby’s path to the Deaflympics required an exceptional level of dedication.
For several months before the tournament, she travelled from her home in Yanco, New South Wales, to Sydney each Wednesday for training before returning home on Thursday. Each journey took approximately eight to nine hours in each direction.
At the same time, Ruby was completing her HSC and balancing her academic responsibilities with the demands of preparing to represent Australia.
The Deaflympics was also the longest period Ruby had spent away from home. She had to manage international travel, limited rest and time zone changes while coping with the pressure of competing on a global stage.
Communication in a multilingual environment presented another challenge. Ruby used interpreters, visual communication and different forms of sign language to connect with athletes and team members from around the world.
Through each challenge, she remained focused on the opportunity ahead.
The impact of a Youth Grant
The financial support provided through the Youth Grant helped reduce the significant costs associated with international travel and competition.
Without the grant, Ruby and her family would have needed to seek further support from their local community through fundraising and donations.
By easing this financial pressure, the grant allowed Ruby to concentrate on preparing for the tournament and making the most of the Deaflympics experience.
For Ruby, the funding represented more than financial assistance. It was an investment in her future and in the broader deaf sporting community.
Looking towards the future
Ruby plans to continue training with her local soccer club and developing her skills in preparation for future representative opportunities.
Her upcoming goals include training camps, international friendly matches and World Cup qualifiers. She also hopes to explore further international competitions and sporting scholarships.
Alongside soccer, Ruby plans to study for a university degree online, allowing her to continue pursuing both her academic and athletic ambitions.
Ruby is also passionate about encouraging younger athletes to become involved in sport. Her journey demonstrates that living in a regional community does not have to prevent a young person from pursuing opportunities at the highest level.
Through mentoring, she hopes to show other deaf and hard of hearing young people that challenges such as distance and communication barriers can be overcome with determination and the right support.
Ruby’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen when talent, commitment and opportunity come together. Deaf Children Australia is proud to have supported her as she represented Australia and took another important step towards her future goals.
