We’re thrilled to announce Nicholas Layton as an ambassador for Deaf Children Australia. He has just returned from the World Deaf Swimming Championships in Argentina, where he won 5 medals during his first competition representing Australia at an international level.
Nick is an amazing ambassador because he’s engaged in and supportive of all the ways our organisation supports deaf and hard of hearing young people. It’s important to Nick that he’s a good influence and provides encouragement to others so that they can reach their full potential. He aims to be a role model to other people – both in and out of the pool.
“I am honoured to be an ambassador for Deaf Children Australia and the great programs it delivers to help young people to be empowered to achieve their goals and to realise the amazing skills and contribution they make to communities across Australia.”
Nick’s journey with Deaf Children Australia started when he was around 15 years old. His mum wrote to our organisation about his swimming results, seeking funding and support for him to pursue his passion.
When asked what swimming meant to him growing up, Nick described swimming as a form of therapy and a place where he learnt the meaning of being on a team.
Nick starting swimming at 18 months old and started competing at age 12. Up until the age of 12, he was completely deaf in the water because the silicone covers for his cochlear implant didn’t exist yet. His favourite and predominant swim style is the Butterfly.
Nick has been heavily involved in Deaf Children Australia’s programs and has received support for his swimming through the Tye Recreation Fund and Youth Grants. Nick was also an invaluable part of the Puggles Swim Steering Committee because of his lived experience. He has helped to shape this program into what it is today.
But swimming is not Nick’s only passion – he is also a talented artist. Nick entered our 2023 art event with the theme Heroes and Leaders and was awarded an art grant for his portrait of the people he considers his greatest influencers.
We have no doubt that Nick’s self-discipline, motivation, and resilience will inspire and motivate the young people we support.
