Frank’s Story – Club empowers deaf athlete to achieve his Olympic dream

Click to watch Frank’s inspiring story

We know most clubs are committed to helping their members thrive. In fact, 88% of the ones we surveyed listedrecognising and nurturing the potential of every child’ as a benefit of including deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children in their programs. In this story, you’ll learn how one club supported a DHH boy to reach the ultimate goal of many athletes – competing at the Olympic Games.

Frank, who was born profoundly deaf, describes his journey from discovering a love for fencing at 12, to representing Australia at the Athens Olympics. You’ll also find out what his coach believes is something of a ‘superpower’ for Frank. Plus, you’ll get an idea about how gestures and facial expressions can help you communicate with a DHH young person.

Frank’s involvement in the sport has gone full circle. He now trains young fencing students, one of whom says he is a ‘fantastic’ coach. Check out the video to learn more.
