Storytelling is a fundamental part of childhood. It is how children make sense of the world, develop their imagination, and begin to understand the power of language. For deaf and hard of hearing children, having access to stories in a visual and interactive way is essential for building communication skills and a sense of identity.
Auslan Storytime is an inclusive program designed to bring stories to life through Australian Sign Language (Auslan). These sessions provide a space where language is seen, felt and shared, helping children and families connect through the joy of books and songs.
What is Auslan Storytime?
Auslan Storytime is an interactive, bilingual experience for children aged 0 to 10 years, led by a Deaf storyteller alongside a spoken English storyteller. This bilingual approach allows all children to follow the narrative together, whether they use Auslan, spoken English or both. It is a hands-on program where children are encouraged to move, sign and play as the story unfolds, creating a welcoming environment in local libraries, schools, and community centres across the country.
Why Visual Storytelling Matters
For many families, Auslan Storytime is one of the first times they see a Deaf adult leading a group and sharing language with confidence. This representation is vital. When children see Deaf role models, they begin to see their own potential and feel a sense of pride in their identity.
There are several key benefits to engaging with bilingual storytelling:
- Early Language Development: Introducing Auslan at a young age supports cognitive growth and provides children with a functional way to express themselves.
- Building Confidence: Success in communication leads to higher self-esteem. When a child learns a new sign and uses it to engage with a story, their confidence grows.
- Social Connection: These sessions bring families together. Parents and carers can meet others in the community, share experiences, and learn alongside their children.
- Cultural Awareness: Participants learn about Deaf culture in a natural, positive environment. It celebrates Auslan as a rich and vibrant language.
The Impact of Auslan Storytime
“As a Deaf storyteller, I often get ‘spine-shivering’ moments watching children as young as two years old pick up Auslan so quickly. It is incredible to see our ‘regulars’ walk in and immediately sign ‘How are you?’ to me with such confidence. I’ve seen many children even those who haven’t started speaking English yet, prefer to use Auslan to express themselves, and the joy on their parents’ faces is overwhelming. Auslan Storytime does more than just teach signs, it sparks creativity and opens a child’s mind to a whole new way of thinking. Seeing these kids blossom into bilingual learners is exactly what Auslan Storytime is all about.”
Supporting Learning at Home
Language learning continues well after the story ends. The experience of signing together helps families create a supportive environment where communication is accessible and valued. By introducing key signs in an appropriate age way, parents and carers can begin to integrate Auslan into their daily routines, from mealtime to bedtime.
This shared journey into language helps bridge the gap between home and the wider community, ensuring children feel seen and supported in every environment.
