Olivia Hermez WE BELONG (VIC)

Tell us how your artwork addresses this year’s theme ‘ We belong’:

This clay artwork represents the Auslan sign for “We Belong” as a deaf person, I use Auslan to communicate, express my deaf identity, and connect with others. By accepting my hearing loss, I have developed a strong sense of self, community and belonging. The inclusion and support I experience within the deaf community have helped me feel valued, connected, and accepted. Through this artwork, I celebrate the idea that everyone deserves to feel a sense of belonging.

Tell us about the ideas or themes your artwork explores with the theme ‘We belong’:

Gaining a sense of belonging is very important to me because Deaf people often share similar experiences and challenges which helps us relate to and support one another. This artwork represents the connection I feel with other Deaf people and the wider community. Through my ability to communicate in Auslan, I can express who I am and feel understood, accepted and valued. The artwork expresses the importance of inclusion connection, and belonging for everyone.

What type of art have you submitted and why?:

The artwork is a hand-built clay sculpture created by using clay as the main material. I chose to sculpt my artwork because clay let me shape my idea in a 3D form, it also helps me show the Auslan sign for ‘We Belong’ in a clear way and express my ideas about connection and belonging.

Anything else you’d like to add?: I have included our “Deaf Flag” which is our deaf community for everyone on this planet.
