Tell us how your artwork addresses this year’s theme ’We belong’:

My artwork is connected to this year’s theme because it tells a story of no matter who or what you are you should be proud of that. It is a reminder to take off your mask and be you. Don’t you ever stop and think how unfair it is to all those deaf people who have to hide who they are. My artwork is saying that for each bit of hate there’s a million pieces of love. That’s where the colours come in. Every bit of colour is their unique parts and if you look, there is the same amount of colour on both deaf and the hearing person. This means that whether you’re deaf or not, everyone is unique.

Tell us about the ideas or themes your artwork explores with the theme ‘We belong’:

When making my artwork I wanted everyone to know that deaf or not we all belong. That’s when I thought of masks. When we are in the hearing community we put on our masks and try and fit in. But when we are in the deaf community, we take off our masks and don’t even have to try to fit in. Because the truth is none of us will ever fit in deaf community or not. And everyone needs to be proud of that and just be themselves.

What type of art have you submitted and why:

I have made my artwork out of clay polymer, which I chose because when I heard the theme I immediately knew I wanted to make a a sculpture. That’s when I thought of everything else like the shape, people, colours and meaning.
