Mabel Knop BELONG – A HEARING AID WORLD (VIC)

Tell us how your artwork addresses this year’s theme ’We belong’:  My art piece is a world in the shape of a hearing aid where my family and deaf community are all having fun together, feeling like they have a place to belong! To me belonging means you are acknowledged and supported by the community. It is a place where people want to get to know you and celebrate your individuality so they can make you feel positive about yourself.

Tell us about the ideas or themes your artwork explores with the theme ‘We belong’:The reason why I chose a hearing aid as the world is because it is a symbol of deafness and fits in well with the theme because i’m hard of hearing and I belong in a deaf/ hard of hearing community. I have created a loving community of people swimming, buying ice cream, bike riding, swinging, taking photos, all together doing different things that they love to and that’s what makes them a unique a community. The the mini figs that are buying ice cream are my family; I thought it was a good idea to make them because they made me feel like I am loved and will always belong to them as a family!

What type o f art have you submitted and why:

I have built a sculpture made entirely out of LEGO bricks and mini figs. I chose LEGO because I like building my own creations and wanted to show that for the DCA competition. I used the mini figs for the people that are together in a belonging community. I also love LEGO MASTERS and wanted to be like them, I have learnt a lot from that show and felt very confident when I was building. Usually, I’m not as confident but I kept on telling myself, ‘you can do this!’
