Deaf Children Australia’s Youth Grants program exists to support deaf and hard of hearing young people to pursue opportunities that matter to them. For some young people, that opportunity may be developing a new skill, continuing their education or taking part in a creative project. For others, it may be sport.
Over the years, Youth Grants have helped support a number of young deaf and hard of hearing athletes as they worked towards their sporting goals. For some, that journey has led all the way to the Deaflympics.
The Deaflympics is one of the highest levels of international competition for deaf and hard of hearing athletes. It brings together competitors from across the world and celebrates excellence in deaf sport. For young athletes, reaching this level takes years of dedication, training, travel and commitment.
DCA has been proud to support several Deaflympians through the Youth Grants program, including Thomas Flook, Josh Reeve, Jack Carey, Ryan Jones, Ruby Miller, Joseph Morosini, Thomas Ginger, Cameron Taylor and Ethan Powell.
Each athlete’s story is different, but they share a common thread. They have shown commitment to their sport, resilience through challenges and pride in representing the deaf and hard of hearing community.
For athletes preparing for major competitions, financial support can make a meaningful difference. A Youth Grant may help cover costs such as training, travel, equipment, uniforms or competition fees. These practical supports can help young people stay focused on their goals and continue building confidence in their chosen pathway.
The impact of a Youth Grant is not only measured by medals or results. It can also be seen in the confidence a young person gains, the experiences they take with them and the example they set for others.
When deaf and hard of hearing children and young people see Deaflympians competing on an international stage, it sends a powerful message. It shows that their goals are valid, their talents deserve support and their place in sport matters.
Representation like this is important. It helps young people imagine what is possible for themselves. It also reminds sporting clubs, schools and communities of the importance of creating accessible and inclusive environments where deaf and hard of hearing athletes can participate, progress and thrive.
DCA’s Youth Grants program continues to support deaf and hard of hearing young people across sport and recreation, art and music, education and skill development. The achievements of past grant recipients show how meaningful this support can be, not only for the young person receiving the grant, but for the wider community who are inspired by their journey.
This June, we are proud to celebrate the Deaflympians who have been supported through Youth Grants, and the hard work, dedication and community pride behind each of their stories.
