Platypus Playgroup is a weekly informal inclusive space for parents, their babies and pre-school children who are deaf and hard of hearing to regularly meet.
The program is relaxed and supportive, providing opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing children and their families to have regular contact, interact and support language development through storytelling and play-based activities in a bilingual environment – English and Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
Platypus Playgroup will provide opportunities for parents to network, share information and experiences in preparation for making informed choices when transitioning to kindergarten and prep. In collaboration and participation with parents, the activity will be coordinated and facilitated by a trained DCA Parent Mentor with lived experience and a Deaf Auslan play facilitator.
Range of activities integrating adult-led learning, child directed play and guided play and learning where children can explore, create and experience self-discovery in collaboration with parents/families e.g. Storytelling, play-based activities (indoor and outdoor), arts & craft, movement and music for deaf children.
Language immersion in a bilingual Auslan/English environment and where the Deaf Auslan play facilitator can provide modelling strategies for families.
Facilitate an informal social environment for parents to share lived experience and foster a community of support.
Visits from deaf role models to encourage parents to set high expectations and possibilities about their child’s capabilities.
Regular visiting activity/play facilitators to offer variety in experience for children.
