Become pen pals with deaf and hard of hearing peers from the UK!
We’re excited to launch an exciting new project in partnership with the UK based National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) – the Pen Pals Project.
The Pen Pals Project aims to give deaf and hard of hearing young people aged 8 to 18 the chance to make new friends on the other side of the globe.
The NDCS has run the program successfully in the UK for several years, and we’re excited they chose DCA to launch their first International Pen Pals Project.
Expressions of interest for Round 2 to start in August have now closed. But you can always register your interest to participate later rounds by clicking on the link below.
How does it work?
Your child is matched with another young deaf or hard of hearing person from the UK of a similar age and that likes similar things.
Participants will exchange letters via email, get to know each other, discuss interests in common and learn from one another.
Our team will coordinate and oversee communications to ensure safety and privacy are protected. The NDCS will do the same with the UK participants.
How long does it last?
The Pen Pals Project lasts for 8 weeks.
If both parties wish to continue corresponding, we will give you the option to exchange details and pursue the friendship without us!
It is important letters are exchanged in a timely manner otherwise it negatively impacts the experience for the UK pen pal. You can find out more about the due dates for each letter by reading our Participant’s Guide
Why join the Pen Pals Project?
By taking part, participants have the chance to achieve the following:
Make new friends
Feel less isolated and improve mental wellbeing
Develop their communication skills
Learn about life in the UK
Who can participate?
The Pen Pals Project is open to deaf and hard of hearing children and young people aged 8 to 18 living in Australia.
How do I apply?

2. If your child gets a place, we will match them with another deaf or hard of hearing young person.
