Hear For Less CEO and founder Robert Henry has recently completed Tough Mudder to raise just over $1,000 for Deaf Children Australia. Rob decided to help raise funds for a family camp for deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. Most deaf children are in mainstream schools and often, they are the only student in their school with a hearing loss. The camps are one of the few opportunities where the students get together and realise they’re not the only deaf person in the world. It is also important for the children and their families to discover that they are not alone in the challenges that they face. This discovery weekend would form bonds that will allow them to share their current and future experiences with each other well after the activities have concluded.

Rob says, “This was my third Tough Mudder, and by far the toughest. The gorilla run through the hills was a killer, but we made it in the end. Most importantly we hit our fundraising target for Deaf Children Australia and want to thank all of those who donated to such a worthy cause.”

The camp would enable the children to create a support network to enhance their communication skills and sense of identity, and increase their self-esteem. This in turn can lead to greater participation in family and community life.

You don’t have to tackle Tough Mudder to support Deaf Children Australia! It could be a Bunnings BBQ, a bike ride or a fun run that is more your pace. If you would like to get involved in community fundraising and raise money for the Family Camp and the Crossing Borders Camp which brings deaf and hard of hearing teenagers from across Australia together, please contact our Fundraising team at  fundraising@deafchildren.org.au

In fact, Hear for Less and DCA joined forces to host a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle at Port Melbourne Bunnings on 28 November and celebrity chef Pete Hilcke joined us to provide summer barbie tips. The barbecue raised $1,500 to help us fund the camps. We want to thank all our sponsors – Bunnings Port Melbourne, Bakers Delight Port Melbourne, Prahran Coles and Prahran Woolworths. We also want to thank our helpers and supporters – Robert Henry, Peter Hilcke, and the staff of DCA, including Acting CEO Geoff Manton, who volunteered their time to cook up the snags and raise much needed funds.
