THE WA Deaf Society has launched a new tool to help the deaf learn Auslan, the Australian Sign Language.
The "grammar disc" DVD was developed by Geoff Pearson, an ESL teacher who recognised the difficulty in teaching grammar to those who use Auslan, a language based on context rather than sentence structure. A 32-year-old deaf woman from Sydney spoke of her “gift of deafness” during the Evening Vigil with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on Saturday 19 July 2008.
Danni Wright, profoundly deaf, from Seven Hills, NSW was selected from all Catholic Australians to be one of the seven young pilgrims from seven different countries chosen to give testimonies to the Pope which focused on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Each pilgrim expressed in their native language how the gift was reflected in his or her own journey of faith.
Addressing an estimated physical audience of 223,000 people and international audience of 500 million, Danni Wright from Sydney presented in Auslan on the gift of knowledge which was interpreted into English. Read more »
