Recreation Program (Victorian Program)

What is the Deaf Children Australia Recreation Program?

The Recreation Program provides sporting, cultural, social and recreational activities for deaf and hard of hearing children and young people to enable them to meet other deaf people, explore new experiences and challenges and build stronger networks with each other.

Families are encouraged to attend to enable them to meet other families and build support networks if they wish.

When are activities held?

Some activities are held during school holidays and others during weekends. Some are held on week days after school hours.

Where are activities held?

Activities are held all over Victoria in varying locations.

How much does it cost to attend?

Each activity is different and some are more expensive than others. Deaf Children Australia subsidizes the cost for deaf and hard of hearing children and young people so costs are kept as low as possible.

Hearing friends are welcome to attend but they must pay extra as their costs are not subsidized.

What kind of activities are held?

Activities include:

School Holiday Program: A number of events are held during the Victorian school holidays such as excursions, BBQs, art & craft activities and fun days. Events are held in Melbourne and country Victoria.

Youth Events: Regular camps and youth evenings are held and other activities may be planned, depending on what young deaf people are interested in.

Sporting Events / Clinics: Deaf children and young people are skilled in various sporting activities and role models may attend to give extra assistance.

Family Camps: Camps are held across Victoria to enable the whole family to attend and meet other families. There is a strong emphasis on social activities during the camps.

Can the whole family attend events?

Most events are designed for the whole family and so families are strongly encouraged to attend. Some events are designed for deaf and young people to encourage independence and confidence and families usually do not attend.

What about deaf children with other disabilities?

Deaf Children Australia will provide support for deaf children with additional needs if required. Specific information must be passed on at time of registration.

How are forthcoming events publicized?

All activities are publicized by flyer and on the Deaf Children Australia website. If you wish to receive flyers in the mail or via email, contact us and your name will be placed on our mailing list, or register on our website.
