Information ServicesWhat is the Information Service?

Deaf Children Australia Provides an information service to interested people on any topic related to childhood deafness and hearing loss.
 
Deaf Children Australia strongly believes that information delivered must be impartial and balanced.
 
There is no charge for the delivery of information to families of deaf and hard of hearing children and young people. There may be a charge for community groups. Deaf Children Australia will use discretion in asking for payment and actively seek your kind donations.
 

Who is the information service for?

The information service is for any person or organisation with an interest in childhood deafness and hearing loss. Priority is given to families of deaf and hard of hearing children and young people and the professionals who work with them.
 

What kind of information is delivered?

A wealth of information is provided to families via the Deaf Children Australia website, through workshops, activities, community presentations, printed and electronic resources.
 
Information on any of the following topics can be provided. Other topics can be arranged:
  • communication methods & choices
  • language development & deaf children
  • parenting a deaf child
  • supporting deaf & hard of hearing children in school
  • the diagnosis of deafness
  • disability legislation, including educational standards
  • advocacy skills for families of deaf children
  • services available for the ongoing support of deaf children
  • technology options
  • classroom tips
  • Deaf Children Australia services
  • general information about deafness for community groups (dependent upon availability of speakers to attend)

What specific workshops are held?

In addition to general information delivery, four specific workshops are also offered:

1. Cool Kids / Cool Parents
A parenting program for parents, carers and guardians of deaf and hard of hearing children
 
2. Being Deaf
For primary aged deaf and hearing children on how deaf people communicate and live
 
3. Who Am I?
For either deaf and hard of hearing young people and their hearing peers to explore their identity, challenges and opportunities
 
4. Puberty
For deaf and hard of hearing children in Grades 5, 6 or 7. (Victoria only)
 
Teachers interested in workshops 2, 3 and 4 must have a deaf or hard of hearing child in their school to be eligible.
 

How is information delivered?

Information can be delivered in a number of ways, including:

  • skills training program and professional development workshops
  • presentations to schools and community groups
  • information sheets
  • the national Helpline
  • books & journals
  • website information with links to other relevant websites
  • “Flying Kites” newsletter
  • publications, including an Auslan dictionary, CD’s and DVD’s
