Auslan Program (Victoria)

Auslan ProgramWhat is the Auslan Program?

The Auslan Program is designed to support families who have a deaf or hard of hearing child to learn Auslan.
A qualified Auslan teacher provides tuition for families wishing to learn Auslan.  Recent changes have resulted in our brochure being out of date.  Please be aware of this when you download it.

Where is tuition provided?

Tuition is provided in coffee shops, through camps and workshops, or for rural families a home tuition service is offered.  Please contact Neil Ray to find out more about your suitability and eligibility to enter this program.

What is the cost of this service?

The Auslan Program is provided free to families.   For families who are eligible to receive this service a resource kit consisting of an Auslan dictionary, CD-ROM and DVD for supporting the learning stages of the family will also be available.

Information for rural families....

In 2009 our focus will provide greater opportunities for rural families. Usually the Auslan teacher will provide a tailored program to the family for one hour once a week. However, due to competing demands of the program, fortnightly visits may be arranged. The program will run for each family for up to 12 months. At the end of this period a review will be conducted and possibly other learning options provided for the family to continue independent learning.  The rural program is still being developed and more information will be available soon regarding workshops and camps.

Why receive this service?

Communication with children is vital. Deaf or hard of hearing children need constant and consistent access to communication at home in a different way. Benefits of learning Auslan will include greater self-esteem, improved access to education and less frustration at home. Knowing even a little Auslan will help.

Who do I contact for this service?
